Return To Routine

Any parent will tell you that routine is important to maintaining sanity. Unfortunately, kids don’t always feel the same way and when my girls were younger a schedule was nothing more than a pipe dream.

For the better part of the last decade, I have been working to establish a routine that allows me to accomplish all the things I not only need to do, but also (and arguably, more importantly) want to do. I was doing pretty good at maintaining it too; up at 6am, write until it was time to walk my youngest to school then back at my desk by 9:30 to do my day job. This routine worked so well I managed to write a complete book plus a novella over the course of the school year.

But the arrival of the summer holidays threw that routine out the window and with it went a little piece of my sanity. Bedtimes stretched later and, as a result, snooze buttons were pushed more often. A general feeling of laziness descended on my house and, after the stress of the past year, I let it wash over me like an old friend.

A little spontaneity is good, but now, well, now I’m ready to get back to my old habits. I’m ready for school to start again. I’m ready for 6am writing sessions and morning walks with my girls. I’m ready to feel that rush of getting 1,500 words written before anyone else in the house is even awake.

I’m also ready for Fall.

Crisp, cool days. Cozy sweaters. Hot Beverages. Summer is a fun little fling, but Autumn is my true love. 🍂
