Review: Are We There Yet? by Kathleen West

In her second novel, Kathleen West delivers an engrossing and relatable family drama full of humour and heart.

Much like her debut, MINOR DRAMAS & OTHER CATASTROPHES, in ARE WE THERE YET? West takes an honest look at the challenges facing teenagers and their parents in today’s world and how one bad decision can have a ripple effect on a community. Social media, peer pressure, bullying, behaviour issues and other thought provoking subjects are all explored in this nuanced and witty novel.

Told through multiple POVs, each character has a distinct voice and short chapters keep the story moving forward at a quick pace. I found myself relating to many of the characters while also shaking my head at their decisions. As a parent of a teen and pre-teen myself, this book was a wake up call to the potential issues that may lie ahead.

ARE WE THERE YET? is the perfect book club read, providing several points of view on important issues and allowing readers to question both the actions of the characters and how we might react in the same situation. This author is a must-read for me now and I highly recommend you pick up a copy.
