In case you didn’t already know this, the 2020 Debuts are a seriously talented and wonderfully supportive group of authors. I am so grateful to have connected with them and that so many of them have shared their Q&A’s with me.
Today I’m excited to feature Kat Turner. Kat’s debut novel—HEX, LOVE AND ROCK & ROLL—comes out on September 15 and I can’t wait to read it.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I wrote some fiction as a child and then went on an extended hiatus when school and work got in the way. Fast forward to when I wrote for my graduate school program and career. I enjoyed academic writing, but something was missing and I couldn’t quite see what. A few years ago, my family moved to a new state, and I switched jobs and made some other major changes in my life. I started writing fiction again on a total whim and never looked back!
What was the first thing you did when you found out your book was getting published?
Literally, the first? Paced around my bedroom in shock and disbelief, trying to shake out all of the energy bubbling within! I think that I also looked in the mirror and told myself that I was awesome. Once I settled down from the heights of the initial high, I started telling people. An impromptu dance party may have transpired shortly after.
How long did it take you to write your debut novel?
From those first frantic journal scribbles to when I signed the publishing contract, almost exactly four years to the day. Never give up!
What does your writing schedule look like?
I cram in the time whenever I can. When I’m drafting, I aim to hit my daily word count in the mornings or afternoons, which often means writing during downtime at work. I struggle to write in the evenings—my writing brain shuts down around 7pm. I’m more flexible with editing and actually prefer to do that in the evenings, curled up in bed with my laptop while my family members are doing their own things.
What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk or habit?
The time of day thing. I swear that my drafting brain turns into an actual pumpkin once the sun goes down.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing your books?
How much the story can change from beginning to end while I’m writing it, taking an entirely different shape from what’s plotted out or conceptualized. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve thought “Wow, I had no idea THAT would happen!”
What is your biggest writing-related dream?
To have my series picked up by Netflix!
ABOUT HEX, LOVE, AND ROCK & ROLL

Now, Helen and Brian struggle to break the curse and tackle their growing feelings for each other. The problem is, the harder they fall for each other, the deadlier the curse becomes.
But as a dark magic cult with an unquenchable thirst for power closes in on them, the couple will have to face more than just their inconvenient desire. With time running out and danger mounting, can they beat the hex before Brian becomes its next victim?
